Indonesian Volcanologists Question About Monitoring of Anak Krakatau

Kolom Utama. Indonesian Volcanologist Surono asked the government to be honest about the existence of the Gunung Anak Krakatau monitoring device and the Sunda Strait tsunami detector.

The man who was called Mbah Rono said that the government should be honest whether they had installed and owned the tool or not.

"We talk about life, that nature must be honest, let's face it with honesty, for example this vital and strategic area (Lampung and Banten), the government is installing the Gunung Anak Krakatau monitoring device, we ask in the vital area that the government installed tsunami early equipment the system warning is not? It must be answered honestly, "he said during a discussion in Pulogadung, East Jakarta, Thursday (1/3).

Surono said there are two types of disaster mitigation, namely identification of disaster threats and community preparation to deal with disasters. He assessed that disaster mitigation without research will result in a total failure.

"The identification of threats includes research, mitigation without failing research is certain, it works accidentally," he said.

Surono also requested that the Gunung Anak Krakatau monitor not die. If the device is damaged by an eruption, the government should replace the equipment with a new one.

Nevertheless, Surono did not think that the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau would cause a tsunami. He also believes that the Sunda Strait tsunami occurred not as a result of the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

Surono likens the Mount Anak Krakatau like a young man who is building his body.

"I was shocked, I used to take care of Anak Krakatau now as it was criminalized because from the results of any research Mount Anak Krakatau was like a young child building his body, and any eruption as great as Anak Krakatau was unlikely to cause a tsunami," said retired Head of the Agency The geology of the ESDM Ministry.
