Shaking the Earthquake 4.2 Magnitude Shook JayaPura with No Potential Tsunami

Pojok Nasional. The Center for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BBMKG) Region V Jayapura, Papua, said that an earthquake with 4.2 magnitude that shook Jayapura, Papua, on Friday at around 8:15 a.m. had no tsunami potential.

Head of Jayapura Regional BBMKG V Region Petrus Demon Sili in Jayapura, Friday (4/1), quoted from Antara, said that the shocks caused by the tectonic earthquake in the Jayapura Regency region were also felt in Heram, Abepura, until Jayapura City.

The BMKG analysis shows that an earthquake occurred at 8:15 a.m. with a magnitude of 4.2.

The epicenter at coordinates 2.46 South Latitude (LS) and 140.55 East Longitude (BT), precisely on land at 13 kilometers northeast of Jayapura Regency, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

He said the tremor was felt to be quite significant. Based on public reports, he said, the impact of the earthquake in the form of shocks was felt at the MMI III intensity scale in Sentani, the scale of the MMI III in Heram, and the MMI II-III scale in Jayapura City.

Judging from the hypocenter depth, he said, it was a shallow earthquake due to local cesarean activity that crossed the Jayapura Regency area. He said the strength of the earthquake was not large enough to generate changes in the seabed which could trigger a tsunami.

"Until now there have been no aftershocks until this news was reported at 8:40 a.m.," said Petrus.

He appealed to the public to remain calm and move as usual.

"Especially people in coastal areas are encouraged not to be provoked by irresponsible issues, because the earthquake that occurred did not have the potential for a tsunami," he said.
